SYNOPSIS
The world of semiconductor nanostructures is requiring the implementation of novel manufacturing capabilities to match the demand for complex photonics, optoelectronics and electronics systems. The undergoing of a deep transition in designing building blocks and assembling them in devices with a variety of functionalities needs knowledge of theoretical problems and creativity. Moreover, the development of emerging concepts in the processing of nanosized products must be accompanied by the implementation of novel metrology concepts, able to face the issue of probing the ultimate capabilities of complex devices with reduced sizes. At IMEC (Belgium) and University of Catania (Italy) are carried out intensive nanotech programs, encompassing enabling technologies for innovative materials fabrication, assessment criteria by advanced metrology solutions and connections with innovation transfer. This session will illustrate some outstanding results and some interesting ideas under study in such Institutions for a variety of applications, from photovoltaics to sensing.
