Among the applications of nanotechnology, those concerning the biological and medical context are expected to achieve results of paramount importance in the forthcoming years. Micro/nano devices for cancer detection and therapy in particular will become crucial for basic medical research and therapeutics in the near future. The present section focuses on different microfluidic applications arising, at least in part, from the cooperation between Sapienza and the IIT Center for Life Nanoscience (CLNS@Sapienza). They include, e.g., microfluidic chips to study endothelial permeability and microdevices incorporating biological tissues and organisms, photonics components and other advanced technologies such as Raman enhanced spectroscopy. Different aspects will be dealt with, from basic research to complete systems already sufficiently mature to step into actual pre-clinical application. |
