Self-lubricant materials: basic mechanisms and applications from the macro scale down to the micro and nano scale
go back
The session is aimed to the introduction and discussion of recent advances on self-lubricant  materials. These materials  i) are of interest for a number of applications where the conventional fluid lubrication does not apply, and  ii) are challenging for the basic processes involved in the solid lubrication. Session will focus on carbon-based materials (graphene, diamond-like carbon, ...) and  metal dichalcogenides (molybdenum disulfide, …). Emphasis will be on the identification of different friction and wear mechanisms operating at the macro and at the micro-nano scale, in different operating environments (vacuum, controlled atmosphere, ambient conditions) and for different architectures of the materials. Possible tribochemistry effects will be also discussed.
Morphological, structural, chemical-stoichiometric characterizations, and functional tribological tests of the materials will be presented through advanced “state-of-the-art” multi-scale analytical techniques.
Finally, during the session, strategies and channels for an effective technological transfer to applications over a wide scale range will be discussed.
