Università degli Studi di Torino
Roberta Cavalli is full professor of Pharmaceutical Technology at the Department of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology of the University of Turin where she tooks her degrees in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and in Pharmacy, the PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Post-Doc in Biopharmaceutics.. She focused her scientific career on the design and development of traditional and innovative delivery systems based on nanotechnology approaches for therapeutic and diagnostic purposes.
RC developed various types of advanced nanocarriers consisting of safe components, either polymers or lipids, admitted by the regulatory authorities to assure biocompatibility and biodegradability. Anti-cancer and anti-infective drugs were especially investigated to obtain a delivery to specific tissues for enhancing activity decreasing possible side effects.
More recently, her interest moved to the development of novel nanobubbles and nanodroplets, core-shell nanostructure filed with a gas or a liquid perfluorocarbon, respectively These new types of nanocarries could be used combined with an external physical stimuls, such as ultrasound, for improving delivery efficiency and targeting. They were exploited as nonocargo for drugs, macromolecules and gases. Nanobubbles, acting as ultrasound contrast agent, could be a theranostic tool providing imaging support to a therapeutic treatment.
She is involved in various national and international research team and she acts as a coordinator of many, either academic or industrial, research projects. Many international papers, congress communications and patents evidenced the RC nanoformulation expertise.
