Control banding tools and strategies for exposure measurement
Fabio BOCCUNI, INAIL, Dept. of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Epidemiology and Hygiene
Control Banding (CB) methods can be useful for risk assessment and management of nanomaterials, given the level of uncertainty in work-related potential health impact of nano-objects and their aggregates and agglomerates. Different approaches and several specific CB tools have been developed during the last years. In 2014 ISO proposed guidelines for controlling and managing risk based on a CB approach and encouraged to evaluate the results of exposure measurements, when feasible, to proper address the exposure band identification. An exposure measurement strategy that takes into account the characteristics of the workplace, work processes and the potentially exposed work force has been published by OECD in 2015. In this framework, a methodology based on the integration of both ISO and OECD standards has been developed and applied to three case study in R&D laboratories selected for the NanoLab Project.
