Carla CADDEO

Carla CADDEO
University of Cagliari

Carla Caddeo graduated, full marks cum laude, in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technologies at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Cagliari in March 2004, discussing the thesis “Liposomi nel targeting polmonare della rifampicina”, supervised by Prof. Chiara Sinico. In November 2004 she started attending the PhD School in Chemistry and Technology of Drugs at the University of Cagliari. In the meantime, she successfully applied for a Marie Curie Host Fellowship for Early Stage Training (Contract MEST-CT-2004-504992) at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, from February 2007 to January 2008. In March 2008 she gained her PhD in Pharmaceutical Technology, discussing the thesis “Cyclodextrins and liposomes for the protection and delivery of tretinoin and resveratrol”, under the supervision of Prof. Chiara Sinico. In September 2008 she was awarded of the Euro-PhD in Advanced Drug Delivery at the University of Patras, Greece. From April to October 2008 she worked at Consorzio EL-PRO, a private company located in the Scientific and Technological Park of Sardinia (Pula, Cagliari), on the preparation and characterization of nanoparticles for pharmaceutical uses. Since January 2009 she is a post-doctoral fellow in Pharmaceutical Technology at the Department of Pharmaceutics, Chemistry and Technology (now Dept. of Life and Environmental Sciences), University of Cagliari. Since the Academic Year 2004/2005 she is teaching assistant for the courses of Technology, Socioeconomics e Pharmaceutical Legislation I, II, and Laboratory of phytotherapeutic preparations at the University of Cagliari; for the Academic Years 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 she is teaching assistant for the Laboratory of phytotherapeutic preparations of the Master in Phytotherapy, University of Cagliari. Dr Carla Caddeo has several years of tutoring and mentoring undergraduate students, providing guidance and support to specific research activities and master’s thesis. She is author of 36 peerreviewed papers, 10 proceedings and several communications at international and national meetings; she has delivered presentations at national and international Universities and meetings. She serves as a reviewer for several peer-reviewed scientific journals. She has been a visiting researcher at the University of Valencia (Spain) (May-July 2010, May-June 2011, November-December 2012, October-November 2014, October-November 2015) broadening her expertise in pre-clinical research involving animal testing.

She actively collaborates with several researchers all over Europe, as evidenced by her publications: Prof. Kristl and coworkers (University of Ljubljana, Slovenia); Prof. Diez-Sales, Prof. Merino, Prof. Nacher (University of Valencia, Spain); Dr. Ramon Pons Pons and Dr. Xavier Fernandez Busquets, University of Barcelona (Spain), among others. Her research activity is mainly focused on the preparation and physico-chemical characterization of innovative nanosized Drug Delivery Systems, especially liposomes and liposome-like vesicles (e.g. elastic vesicles containing penetration enhancers) for the protection and topical or (trans)dermal delivery of antioxidant, local anaesthetics, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial drugs. Recently, her interest has also been oriented to novel strategies for the enhancement of colon delivery of antioxidant/anti-inflammatory drugs. To this purpose, polymer/polysaccharide coated vesicles have been developed and tested.
