Paulo Bartolo is Chair Professor on Advanced Manufacturing at the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering (MACE), University of Manchester (UK), Visiting Professor at Nanyang University (Singapore), Professor of Biomaterials (Cathedra UNESCO) at the University of Habana (Cuba), Collaborator Professor of the Advanced Manufacturing Group at the Tecnologico de Monterrey (Mexico) and CIAUD (The Research Centre for Architecture, Urbanism and Design) a Centre of Excellence of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology based at the University of Lisbon (Portugal). At the School of MACE he is the Head of the Manufacturing Group, the Head of the Innovative Manufacturing Research Theme, Director of the Manchester Biomanufacturing Centre and Principal Investigator of the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology. He is also Champion of the Biomedical Devices and Systems core area at the Sir Henry Royce Institute (SHRI) for Advanced Materials a major UK initiative (£250M) and member of the Scientific Committee of the SHRI for Advanced Materials.

He is a Fellow of CIRP (The International Academy of Production Engineering), Chairman of the CIRP Scientific Technical Committee on Electro-Physical and Chemical Processes and served as Vice-Chairman of the CIRP Collaborative Working Group on Biomanufacturing (2010-2012). He is also Advisor of the Brazilian Institute of Biofabrication (INCT-BIOFABRIS) funded by the Brazilian Government, member of the Additive Manufacturing Platform (a sub-platform of the MANUFUTURE Technological Platform) and co-responsible of its National & Regional Working Groups and member of the Coordination Board of the recently formed network “Europe Makes Ceramics”.

In 2014, Paulo Bartolo was invited by the Portuguese Government to integrate a commission to define the goals and criteria for the future research assessment process as well the economic impact in Portuguese Universities. He was member of a Commission appointed by the Portuguese Parliament to prepare a Portuguese Strategic Plan for Science & Research (2010-2011). In 2013, he was invited by the President of the Coordination and Development Commission of the Portuguese Central Region to advise in the definition of the Strategic Research Agenda (SRA), defining the priority investment areas for the European Structural funds. Paulo Bartolo is also advisor of several International funding agencies.
