NanoDiode Project

 Pieter van Broekhuizen (1950) is biochemist and nanotechnologist. He got his PhD in nanotechnologies, uncertainties and the operationalization of the precautionary principle at the nanotechnology workplace.

In 1980 founded the Chemiewinkel, the Consultancy and Research Centre on Chemistry, Work and Environment at the University of Amsterdam. At this university, until end 2015 he was manager of the department of Nanotechnologies and Chemical Risks of the IVAM Environmental Research group, covering the interface between occupational health and safety, environment and chemical risks and a special focus on nanomaterials.

He is advisor on chemical risk issues and nanotechnologies for the trade unions and industrial organizations. He is member of the Dutch Social and Economic Council’s committee on occupational exposure limits and advising the Dutch government on nanotechnologies’ risk governance.

He specialized in chemical and product hazards and their effects on man and the environment. He was involved in studies on the potential of sustainable products, introduction of innovative processes and optimising the conditions for substitution of hazardous substances, such as organic solvents, biofluids and nanomaterials.

He is involved in the public debate on nanotechnologies, coordinated several European nanotechnologies’ capacity building projects for NGOs and trade unions. He developed generic nano reference values as provisional alternative for OELs. He is coordinator of the European project NanoDiode on outreach and dialogue on nanotechnologies and the stimulation of responsible research and innovation.
