Fabrizio Gelain, Ph.D. is Scientific Co-Director of the Center for Nanomedicine and Tissue Engineering in Milan. He conducted his research projects at the Stem Cell Research Institute (Milan), at the Center for Biomedical Engineering (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and at the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. In 2008 he was named Group Leader at the University of Milan-Bicocca (Italy) and Associate Editor of the scientific journals PLoS ONE and Frontiers in Neuroengineering. In more than 15 years of experience in the tissue engineering and nanotech fields he has developed new functionalized self-assembling peptides for three-dimensional stem cell cultures and neural tissue engineering approaches. Two years ago he became Head Unit at the IRCCS Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza Opera di San Pio da Pietrelcina. Lastly, he is member of the Scientific Advisory Council of the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation. In 2011 he co-founded Nanomed3D srl, an Italian start-up company focused on the development of nanotech-based substrates for advanced 3D cell cultures.
