Nanotechnologies are largely celebrated for their ability to tailor material properties well beyond what can be found in nature, changing conductivity, stiffness, ruggedness etc... and properly emphasizing key physical and chemical effects. However the actual impact of innovations at the nanoscale largely depends on whether they are exploited at the device and at the system levels, thus “tunneling” the entire “product value chain”. In this perspective, it is essential for material science to meet engineering ingenuity. Nanoelectronics, photonics and sensing systems are fields where such a graceful convergence between nano-engineering and novel device/systems developments is taking place every day, leading to breakthrough innovations that are shaping our everyday life. The session will provide coverage of nano-innovations that are expected to support the IoT development and will also give an overview of how nanoscale engineering is having impact on distributed sensing systems. |
